INTRODUCTION |
Michael: Hi everyone, and welcome back to FinnishPod101.com. This is Beginner Season 1 Lesson 16 - Is Your Finnish Flight Delayed? Michael here. |
Nico: Hei. I'm Nico. |
Michael: In this lesson you’ll become familiar with the grammar and phrases likely to appear in airport announcements. The conversation takes place at an airport. |
Nico: It's between Aino and Heikki. In addition, there are announcements made by airport staff over the airport speakers. |
Michael: The speakers are married, so they'll be using informal Finnish. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
Airport Staff(announcement on the speakers): Arvoisat matkustajat. Lennon numero AY917 (AY yhdeksänsataaseitsemäntoista) Helsingistä Berliiniin lähtöportti on vaihtunut. Lähtöportti on nyt portti numero 25 (kaksikymmentäviisi). |
Aino: Voi ei, Heikki! Nyt tuli kiire. |
Heikki: Kyllä, meidän pitää juosta, koska täytyy ehtiä kentän toiselle puolelle. |
Aino: Emme ehdi tax-free ostoksille ollenkaan! |
... |
Airport Staff(announcement on the speakers): Arvoisat matkustajat. Lennon numero AY917 (AY yhdeksänsataaseitsemäntoista) Helsingistä Berliiniin lähtöaika on muuttunut. Teknisten ongelmien vuoksi lähtö viivästyy noin tunnin ja 45 (neljäkymmentäviisi) minuuttia. Arvioitu lähtöaika on kello 18:45 (kahdeksantoista neljäkymmentäviisi). |
Aino:Ei ole totta! Juoksimme turhaan! |
Heikki: Mutta nyt ehdimme hyvin tax-free ostoksille... |
Michael: Listen to the conversation one time slowly. |

Airport Staff(announcement): Dear passengers. The departure gate for flight number AY917(nine-hundred-seventeen) from Helsinki to Berlin has changed. The gate is now gate number twenty-five. |
Aino: Oh no, Heikki! Now we're in a hurry. |
Heikki: Yes, we have to run, since we have to make it to the other side of the airport. |
Aino: We don't have enough time for tax-free shopping at all! |
... |
Airport Staff(announcement of the speakers):Dear passengers. The departure time for flight number AY917 from Helsinki to Berlin has changed. Due to technical difficulties the flight has been delayed by approximately one hour and forty-five minutes. The estimated departure time is at six-forty-five p.m. |
Aino: I can't believe this! We ran for nothing! |
Heikki: But now we have plenty of time for tax-free shopping... |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Michael: Nico, Helsinki airport is the biggest in Finland and is also the hub airport for the main Finnish airline company, right? |
Nico: That’s right. |
Michael: So it might happen that some of our listeners will have to kill time there. |
Nico: It's very possible! In that case, they might want to buy some Finnish souvenirs or do some tax-free shopping. |
Michael: What are some popular Finnish souvenirs? |
Nico: Popular souvenirs from Finland include merchandise that feature Moomin characters, and the well-known Marimekko textile goods. |
Michael: And what about food? Are there any specialties? |
Nico: There are some deli shops at the airport where you can buy some Finnish delicacies to bring back home or to your friends abroad. For example, Lappish fish preserved with different spices, or reindeer salami... |
Michael: Those seem worth a try! |
Nico: Also we have famous buckthorn jam and karelian pies. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Michael: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Nico: lähtöportti |
Michael: meaning "departure gate." |
Nico: As with many other Finnish words that we have seen, lähtöportti is comprised of two words, lähtö meaning "departure" and portti meaning "gate." |
Michael: This word is usually used only at airports to refer to the gate that your flight is going to leave from. What about the departure points for other kinds of transportation? |
Nico: If you'd like to express the correct platform where, for example, a bus or train is about to leave, you shouldn't use lähtöportti. Instead, use the expression laituri, which means "platform," or pysäkki, which means"bus-stop," for buses, and raide for trains. |
Michael: It means"track" or "platform." Can you give us an example using the word meaning “departure gate” for a flight? |
Nico: Sure. For example, you can say.. Lennon lähtöportti on merkitty lentolippuun. |
Michael: ..which means "The flight departure gate is marked on the ticket." Okay, what's the next word? |
Nico: lähtöaika |
Michael: meaning "departure time." |
Nico: lähtö means "departure," and aika means "time." In this case it refers to any kind of departure time or boarding time. |
Michael: Can you give us an example using this word? |
Nico: Sure. For example, you can say.. Mikä olikaan lennon lähtöaika? |
Michael: .. which means "What was the departure time for the flight, again?" Okay, now onto the grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Michael: In this lesson you'll learn vocabulary related to airports and flights. |
Nico: Aino and Heikki were at the airport waiting for their flight, and heard a couple of announcements related to their flight. |
Michael: Let’s examine these announcements a little more closely. Nico, could you repeat the first part of the announcement in the dialogue? |
Nico: Sure, Arvoisat matkustajat. Lennon numero AY917 (AY yhdeksänsataaseitsemäntoista) Helsingistä Berliiniin lähtöportti on vaihtunut. Lähtöportti on nyt portti numero 25 (kaksikymmentäviisi). |
Michael: Which means “Dear passengers. The departure gate for flight number AY917 from Helsinki to Berlin has changed. The gate is now gate number twenty-five.” |
Nico: Announcements at travel-related places, such as airports, railway stations, or bus terminals often start with the expression arvoisat matkustajat, |
Michael: meaning “Dear passengers.” |
Nico: Actually, in this expression arvoisa literally means “honorable,” and matkustajat is “passenger” in the plural form. |
Michael: This phrase is expressing respect towards the passengers and is very formal. |
Nico: Following that we had lennon which is the nominative case for Lento, meaning “flight.” Lennon numero AY917 means “flight number AY917.” |
Michael: Next we had the place of origin and destination for the flight, which you can say with the pattern “from A to B,” |
Nico: which in this case in Finnish is Helsingistä Berliiniin, |
Michael: “from Helsinki to Berlin.” |
Nico: The place of origin is in the elative case, which can be recognised from the -sta/-stä ending. |
Michael: Can you give us some examples of other cities in the elative case? |
Nico: Sure! Lontoosta |
Michael: “from London,” |
Nico: Shanghaista |
Michael: “from Shanghai,” |
Nico: New Yorkista |
Michael: “from New York.” Now you have to pay attention, because the cases of the departure point and destination are different. The destination is in the illative case, which expresses where something is going. |
Nico: For example, Lontooseen, Shanghaihin, New Yorkiin |
Michael: Respectively meaning “to London,” “to Shanghai,” “to New York.” You shouldn’t worry too much about airport trouble, though, because changes in departure or arrival times, gates, terminals and so on will be made very clear in the announcements and are usually in the present perfect or in the present tense. Nico, could you give us some examples? |
Nico: Sure. For example, you may hear Lähtöportti on vaihtunut, |
Michael: “The departure gate has changed.” This is in the present perfect. |
Nico: Or it may be in the present tense, as in Lähtö viivästyy |
Michael: meaning “The departure will be delayed.” Listeners, please remember that there is no future tense in the Finnish language. What are some other useful words that can be heard in announcements? |
Nico: You could hear the verb muuttua, |
Michael: “to change,” |
Nico: the words tekninen and ongelma, |
Michael: respectively meaning “technical” and “problem,” |
Nico: Another useful one is bussikuljetus, |
Michael: “transport by bus,” |
Nico: turvatarkastus and passintarkastus |
Michael: “security check” and “passport control.” Finally, let’s give some examples of sentences that appear frequently in announcements. |
Nico: This one is very common - Lasten ja pienten vauvojen kanssa matkustavat voivat nousta koneeseen ensimmäisenä. |
Michael: "Passengers travelling with children and small babies can board the plane first." |
Nico: Myrskyn vuoksi lähtö viivästyy. |
Michael: "Due to a storm the departure is being delayed." |
Outro
|
Michael: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye! |
Nico: Hei hei. |
