Hi everyone! I’m Alisha. |
Welcome to Conversational Phrases! |
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations. |
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to ask and answer the question, "How do you say this?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask someone how a word is pronounced. |
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases! |
Listen to the dialogue. |
Miten tämä sanotaan? |
Se on "parkkipaikka". |
Once more with the English translation. |
Miten tämä sanotaan? |
“How do you say this?” |
Se on "parkkipaikka". |
"It's 'parking lot.'” |
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “How do you say this?” |
That's: Miten tämä sanotaan? |
Listen to it again: Miten tämä sanotaan?, Miten tämä sanotaan? |
This Finnish sentence means something like " How is this said? ” But it means “How do you say this?” |
Now, how do you answer this question? |
The pattern is: |
Se on [ ]. |
“It's [ ].” |
For example: |
"It's 'parking lot.'” |
Se on "parkkipaikka"., Se on "parkkipaikka". |

HideWhat's the hardest word for you to pronounce in Finnish?
Hi Gwen,
Thank you for your question. "How do you say ...in Finnish?" would be then "Kuinka sanot ...suomeksi?" or simply "mikä on... suomeksi?" (What is ... in Finnish?)
Kuinka sanot "aunt" suomeksi? or mikä on "aunt" suomeksi?
Let us know if you have any questions.
Cheers,
Aarni
