INTRODUCTION
John: How to Talk About Girls
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to FinnishPod101.com. I'm John.
Aino: And I'm Aino!
John: This is Must-Know Finnish Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 4. In this lesson, you'll learn how to talk about girls.
John: Want to talk about girls? Try using these expressions to sound more urban and local!
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Aino: muija
Aino: bööna
Aino: tytsy
Aino: friidu
John: Aino, what's our first expression?
Aino: muija
John: literally meaning "woman." And when it's used as a slang expression, it also means "woman."
Aino: [SLOW] muija [NORMAL] muija
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Aino: muija
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to a woman. Be careful — when used among young people, this word can be a common word to refer to any woman, but when used with elderly people and in a formal setting, the tone may be offensive and refer — in a derogatory tone — to an older woman. Sometimes this word is also used to refer to someone's girlfriend or wife.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Aino: [NORMAL] Se on Kallen muija. [SLOW] Se on Kallen muija.
John: "She is Kalle’s broad." or literally "It is Kalle’s broad."
Aino: [NORMAL] Se on Kallen muija.
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Aino: bööna
John: It doesn’t have a literal meaning. But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "young woman."
Aino: [SLOW] bööna [NORMAL] bööna
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Aino: bööna
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to young women. Be careful, some women may find this term offensive.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Aino: [NORMAL] Böönät lähti risteilylle. [SLOW] Böönät lähti risteilylle.
John: "The chicks went on a cruise."
Aino: [NORMAL] Böönät lähti risteilylle.
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Aino: tytsy
John: It doesn’t have a literal meaning. But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "young woman."
Aino: [SLOW] tytsy [NORMAL] tytsy
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Aino: tytsy
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to young women in a different way than the previous example. Be careful, some women may find this term offensive as well.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Aino: [NORMAL] Mitäs tytsyt? [SLOW] Mitäs tytsyt?
John: "What’s up girls?"
Aino: [NORMAL] Mitäs tytsyt?
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Aino: friidu
John: It doesn’t have a literal meaning. But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "young woman."
Aino: [SLOW] friidu [NORMAL] friidu
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Aino: friidu
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: This is another slang expression when you want to refer to young women. Again, be careful, some women may find this expression rude.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Aino: [NORMAL] Oot sä kyllä rohkee friidu. [SLOW] Oot sä kyllä rohkee friidu.
John: "You are one brave girl."
Aino: [NORMAL] Oot sä kyllä rohkee friidu.
QUIZ
John: Okay listeners, are you ready to be quizzed on the expressions you just learned? I will describe four situations, and you will choose the right expression to use in your reply. Are you ready?
John: You refer to a young woman in an informal situation.
[pause - 5 sec.]
Aino: bööna
John: "young woman"
John: You mention a woman in a casual setting.
[pause - 5 sec.]
Aino: muija
John: "woman"
John: You hear a young person mentioning something about a young woman. They’ll probably say:
[pause - 5 sec.]
Aino: friidu
John: "young woman"
John: Another way to mention a young woman, but you’re less likely to hear it from elderly people.
[pause - 5 sec.]
Aino: tytsy
John: "young woman"
